New Mexico Angels will transition to a new president May 15.

That will be the final day for current President Drew Tulchin, a mainstay in the New Mexico business scene over the last six years as president of the organization. His replacement will be Yasine Armstrong, a New Mexico entrepreneur.

New Mexico Angels is an organization that invests in and supports high-growth companies in New Mexico.

Armstrong begins her new role May 15, but Tulchin said that he will continue with the organization through June to aid in the transition.

In his nearly six years at the helm of the organization, Tulchin has seen many changes in the New Mexico business landscape. When he began as president, it was in the depths of the pandemic and lockdowns.

Tulchin spoke to Albuquerque Business First about his time as president and the transition.

“I’ve done a few things that I think have really lasted,” he said when asked to reflect on the last six years. “One is we’ve increased membership, sponsorships and participation (by) about four times. We have increased our outreach, our connections to businesses.”

Tulchin said New Mexico holds advantages economically.

The relatively small community allows people to “collaborate and work with others” more easily.

The transition is the latest for New Mexico Angels in its long history. The organization traces its roots back to 1999.

“I’m passing the baton, so that’s No. 1. That’s what I’m doing next,” Tulchin said.

Then after a “summer vacation,” he said he wants to continue to help companies involved with New Mexico Angels and the New Mexico Vintage Fund “to be able to get the next step in their capital and their business milestones so we can all be successful.”

As for New Mexico Angels, the organization has a new, five-year strategic plan based around New Mexico business trends that Armstrong will oversee. Tulchin mentioned working on blended capital, which allows startups to get funding form both angel investors and institutions as one focus.

Armstrong praised the work that Tulchin did as head of the organization.

“Drew has done just an incredible job of getting the Angels to where it’s at now,” she said. “Not only is it an incredible, stable and well-respected organization, but he has really made them a player in the ecosystem and done it in a way that he has the trust of investors, but also entrepreneurs and all of our partners.”

Armstrong added she plans to build on Tulchin’s work and continue to invest in high-growth companies.

“This is a growing organization and the business environment in New Mexico, there’s more and more happening,” Tulchin said. “So it’s important that New Mexico Angels advances and evolves with what our community needs for successful growth companies.”
